Glyn Elwyn
Glyn Elwyn is a primary care clinician with research interests in shared decision making, risk communication, the design and evaluation of decision support interventions and the integration of health informatics into clinical practice. He was appointed inter-school Distinguished Research Chair at Cardiff University in May 2005, and is the Chair of the Clinical Epidemiology Interdisciplinary Research Group at the School of Medicine and Director of Research at the Department of Primary Care and Public Health. He has published 223 peer-reviewed articles, with grant capture over £10M in the last decade.
Together with Professor Adrian Edwards, he convenes a decision laboratory. The laboratory has developed a suite of web-based interactive patient decision support (see www.prosdex.com, www.amniodex.com, www.bresdex.com), tools that have been adapted in 2011 by NHS Direct for use in the UK. Recent work has focused on the development of Option Grids www.optiongrid.co.uk
He Chairs the International Patient Decision Aids Standards Collaboration and has been a member of the lead faculty and co-director at the Summer Institutes for Informed Patient Choice, Dartmouth College, New Hampshire (2007-11. He co-edits 'Shared decision making: Evidence Based Patient Choice' (Oxford University Press, 2nd edition 2009) and developed the OPTION instrument to measure shared decision making http://www.optioninstrument.com/
He has a personal chair at IQ, the Scientific Institute for Quality of Healthcare, Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre and is a Visting Chair at the School of Public Health and Primary Care (CAPRHI), University of Maastricht, Netherlands. He was the Royal College of General Practitioners' UK delegate to the European Association of Quality Improvement (EQuiP). In that role, he developed the International Family Practice Maturity Matrix: (www.maturitymatrix.co.uk) - a measure of organisational development in primary care.
