Kate Brain

Dr Kate Brain is a health psychologist with an interest in psychological aspects of screening and prevention. She joined Cardiff University School of Medicine in 1996 as a post-doctoral researcher on the first large-scale trial of cancer genetic services. Dr Brain leads the Psychology and Genetics team and has an international reputation in carrying out high quality research in the area of cancer genetic risk, for example understanding how people perceive and adapt to their genetic risk; how appraisal, coping and personality influence outcomes relating to health behaviours such as screening; and how we can develop interventions that aim to minimise negative affect and support decision making in people at increased genetic risk. A further area of interest is cancer symptom awareness and early presentation behaviour in the general population. Dr Brain represents Wales in the International Cancer Benchmarking Partnership, which aims to understand possible causes of international differences in cancer survival rates and identify actions to improve cancer survival: http://info.cancerresearchuk.org/spotcancerearly/ICBP/. Together with Professor Glyn Elwyn and Professor Adrian Edwards, Dr Brain convenes the Decision Lab at Cardiff University.
